shortage-এর বহুবচন; short (স্বল্প/কম) বিশেষণ + -age প্রত্যয়ের সংযোগে গঠিত, অর্থ ‘ঘাটতি/অপর্যাপ্ত পরিমাণ’; ১৯শ শতাব্দী থেকে এ অর্থে প্রচলিত।
