From Old English “sċelf” (‘shelf, ledge’); plural “shelves” shows the f→v change (shelf → shelves). Verb “shelve” developed later meaning ‘to put on a shelf’ and figuratively ‘to set aside/postpone’.
পুরাতন ইংরেজি “sċelf” (অর্থ: ‘তাক/উঁচু ধাপ/লেজ’) থেকে এসেছে; বহুবচন “shelves”-এ f→v ধ্বনি-পরিবর্তন দেখা যায় (shelf → shelves)। পরে “shelve” ক্রিয়াটি গড়ে ওঠে—অর্থ ‘তাকে রাখা/সাজানো’ এবং রূপক অর্থে ‘স্থগিত/পেছানো’।
Definition
“Shelves” most commonly means more than one shelf: flat, rigid surfaces fixed to a wall or inside furniture for storing or displaying items; it can also refer to the amount that a shelf can hold, or to a natural ledge/reef called a shelf. As a verb form (from “shelve”), it means to put something onto shelves or to postpone/put aside a plan or project.
“Shelves” সাধারণত “shelf”-এর বহুবচন: দেয়ালে বা আলমারি/ক্যাবিনেটের ভেতরে লাগানো সমতল শক্ত পাটাতন, যেখানে জিনিসপত্র রাখা বা প্রদর্শন করা হয়; কখনও কখনও তাকের ধারণক্ষমতা বোঝাতেও ব্যবহৃত হয়, এবং ভূ-প্রকৃতিতে প্রাকৃতিক উঁচু ধাপ/লেজ বা রিফ/বালুচরকেও “shelf” বলা হয়। ক্রিয়া হিসেবে ( “shelve” থেকে) এর অর্থ হলো কোনো কিছু তাকে রাখা/সাজানো বা কোনো পরিকল্পনা/প্রকল্প স্থগিত/পিছিয়ে দেওয়া।
