আধুনিক ইংরেজিতে self- (অর্থ: ‘নিজে/নিজ দ্বারা’) + instruction (অর্থ: ‘শিক্ষাদান/প্রশিক্ষণ’) মিলিয়ে গঠিত; ২০শ শতকে শিক্ষা ও প্রশিক্ষণ প্রসঙ্গে শব্দটি বেশি প্রচলিত হয়।

Self-instruction is learning that a person directs and carries out on their own, using resources such as books, videos, online courses, or practice, rather than being taught face-to-face by a teacher.
স্ব-নির্দেশিত শেখা হলো এমন একটি শেখার প্রক্রিয়া যেখানে একজন ব্যক্তি শিক্ষক ছাড়াই বই, ভিডিও, অনলাইন কোর্স বা অনুশীলনের মতো উপকরণ ব্যবহার করে নিজেই শেখে এবং শেখার দিকনির্দেশনা নিজে দেয়।
