লাতিন “securus” (অর্থ: দুশ্চিন্তামুক্ত/নিরাপদ) থেকে, পুরনো ফরাসি “securite” ও মধ্য ইংরেজি “security” হয়ে এসেছে; অর্থনীতিতে প্রথমে ‘জামানত/নিরাপত্তা’ অর্থে এবং পরে লেনদেনযোগ্য বিনিয়োগ উপকরণ বোঝাতে অর্থটি বিকশিত হয়।

“Securities” refers mainly to tradable financial instruments like stocks, bonds, debentures, or mutual fund units; it can also mean collateral or guarantees given to ensure repayment or performance.
“Securities” বলতে সাধারণত শেয়ার, বন্ড, ডিবেঞ্চার, মিউচুয়াল ফান্ড ইউনিট ইত্যাদি লেনদেনযোগ্য আর্থিক উপকরণ বোঝায়; এছাড়া ঋণ বা দায়বদ্ধতা পরিশোধ/সম্পাদন নিশ্চিত করতে প্রদত্ত জামানত বা নিরাপত্তা (collateral) বোঝাতেও ব্যবহৃত হয়।
