From Middle English sand, from Old English sand (“sand”), from Proto-Germanic *samdaz; plural “sands” developed naturally for large stretches of sand, and the “sands (of life/time)” sense comes from the hourglass metaphor.

Definition
“Sands” most commonly means grains of sand collectively (especially in plural when referring to stretches like desert sands or beach sands). It can also appear in older or poetic usage meaning a person’s allotted time or lifespan (linked to the image of sand running in an hourglass).
