আরবি ‘আṣফার’ (অর্থ ‘হলুদ’) শব্দ থেকে মধ্যযুগীয় লাতিন/পুরাতন ফরাসি রূপের মাধ্যমে এসেছে; হলুদ রং তৈরিতে ব্যবহৃত উদ্ভিদকে নির্দেশ করতে গিয়ে মধ্য ইংরেজিতে ‘safflower’ শব্দটি গঠিত হয়।
Definition
Safflower is a cultivated, thistle-like plant (Carthamus tinctorius) in the daisy family, grown chiefly for safflower oil; historically its dried petals were also used to make yellow-red dyes and sometimes as a saffron substitute.
