আরবি ‘রিয়াল/রিয়াল্’ (riyāl) থেকে এসেছে; উৎসগতভাবে স্প্যানিশ/পর্তুগিজ ‘রেয়াল’ (real) নামের ঐতিহাসিক মুদ্রার সঙ্গে সম্পর্কিত, যা পরবর্তীতে মধ্যপ্রাচ্যের আধুনিক মুদ্রার নাম হিসেবে গৃহীত হয়।
