From Greek rhēgos (“blanket”) + lithos (“stone”), coined in geology to mean a ‘blanket of rock’ over bedrock.

Definition

Regolith is the unconsolidated, loose surface material—rock fragments, dust, sand, and soil—that overlies solid bedrock on Earth and other rocky bodies such as the Moon; it forms the ground’s outermost blanket and may also occur underwater (submarine regolith).
