Origin & History
From earlier phrase “rag-tag and bobtail,” referring to a disreputable or miscellaneous crowd; ultimately connected with “rag” (tattered cloth) + “tag” (a dangling piece). First recorded in the 19th century.
আগের “rag-tag and bobtail” বাক্যাংশ থেকে এসেছে—যার অর্থ ছিল বদনামি বা নানা রকমের লোকের জটলা; মূলত “rag” (ছেঁড়া কাপড়) + “tag” (ঝুলে থাকা টুকরো/খণ্ড) থেকে অর্থগত যোগ আছে। ১৯শ শতকে শব্দটি নথিভুক্ত।
Definition
Used to describe (1) something worn-out, untidy, or in poor condition, and (2) a group made up of many different kinds of people or things without uniformity.
(১) জীর্ণ-শীর্ণ, অগোছালো বা ভাঙাচোরা অবস্থার কিছু বোঝাতে এবং (২) নানা ধরনের, একরকম নয় এমন লোক/বস্তুর অগোছালো মিশ্রণে গঠিত দল বা সমষ্টি বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত হয়।
