From Latin proscaenium, from Greek proskēnion (‘in front of the skēnē (stage building)’), from pro- (‘before’) + skēnē (‘stage/tent’).

Definition
Proscenium refers to the front-of-stage area in a theatre (between the curtain and the orchestra/pit) and, by extension, the proscenium arch—the structural frame that marks the boundary between the audience and the stage.
