Origin & History
From Middle English poll (“head”), later used for counting “heads” (people) and then voting records; modern senses developed around elections and surveys.
মধ্য ইংরেজি 'poll' (অর্থ: মাথা) থেকে; পরে মানুষকে ‘মাথা গুনে’ গণনা করার অর্থে এবং সেখান থেকে ভোটগণনা/ভোটাভুটির নথির অর্থে প্রসারিত হয়; আধুনিক অর্থগুলো নির্বাচন ও জরিপের প্রেক্ষিতে বিকশিত হয়েছে।
Definition
Polls commonly means surveys that measure public opinion, or the act/results of voting in an election; it can also mean the voting places ('the polls').
