শব্দটি লাতিন podagra থেকে এসেছে; এর উৎস প্রাচীন গ্রিক podágra, অর্থ ‘গেঁটেবাত/পায়ের ফাঁদ’, যেখানে pous/pod- মানে ‘পা’ এবং agra মানে ‘ধরা/খিঁচ ধরা (seizure)’.

Podagra is a type of gout that causes sudden, severe pain, redness, warmth, and swelling in the big toe joint (the first metatarsophalangeal joint), often triggered by uric acid crystal buildup.
পডাগ্রা হলো গেঁটেবাতের (গাউট) একটি ধরন, যাতে বড় পায়ের আঙুলের গোড়ার সন্ধিতে (প্রথম মেটাটারসোফ্যালাঞ্জিয়াল জয়েন্ট) হঠাৎ তীব্র ব্যথা, লালভাব, উষ্ণতা ও ফোলা দেখা দেয়—সাধারণত ইউরিক অ্যাসিডের স্ফটিক জমার কারণে।
