From the name of Samuel Plimsoll (1824–1898), associated with the ‘Plimsoll line’/mark on ships; the footwear sense is a later transfer of the name.

Plimsoll usually refers to a light canvas shoe with a rubber sole, traditionally worn for PE/sports or on boats; in technical thermodynamics, it can also mean the plimsoll symbol (⦵ or o) used as a superscript to mark an arbitrarily chosen non-zero reference point.
