Origin & History
From English “pencil,” via Middle French pincel/pinsel (“small paintbrush”), from Latin penicillus (“little tail/brush”), diminutive of peniculus. The meaning shifted from “brush” to “graphite writing tool” in the 16th–17th centuries.
ইংরেজি “pencil” শব্দটি মধ্য ফরাসি pincel/pinsel (“ছোট তুলি/ব্রাশ”) হয়ে লাতিন penicillus (“ছোট লেজ/তুলির মতো ব্রাশ”) থেকে এসেছে; ১৬–১৭ শতকে অর্থ “তুলি” থেকে “গ্রাফাইট দিয়ে লেখা/আঁকার সরঞ্জাম” হিসেবে পরিবর্তিত হয়।
