গ্রিক παρένθεσις (parénthesis) থেকে (অর্থ “পাশে বসানো/সন্নিবেশ”), লাতিন parenthesis হয়ে ইংরেজিতে এসেছে; para- “পাশে” + en- “ভিতরে” + thesis “স্থাপন” থেকে গঠিত।
Definition
Parentheses are the symbols “(” and “)” used in writing to add extra information, clarification, or an aside that is not essential to the main sentence; in mathematics they also group terms to show order and structure.
