From Middle English parchemin, via Old French parchemin, ultimately from Latin pergamena (charta) meaning “(paper) of Pergamum,” a city associated with the production of parchment.

Definition
Parchment is a writing material traditionally made from specially prepared and polished animal skin (such as calf, sheep, or goat). The word can also mean a document (or diploma) written on such material, or modern stiff paper that imitates parchment, as well as the pale creamy-tan color called “parchment.”
