From modern scientific Latin Ostariophysi (name of the fish superorder), from Greek ostárion ‘little bone’ (diminutive of osteon ‘bone’) + -physi, from phýsis ‘bladder’ (referring to the swim bladder connection in the Weberian apparatus), plus English adjectival suffix -ous.

Relating to or characteristic of Ostariophysi (a large group of bony fishes such as carps, catfishes, minnows, and tetras), especially noted for the Weberian apparatus that enhances hearing and, in many species, the presence of an alarm substance (Schreckstoff) released when the skin is injured.
