From ortho- (“straight, correct”) + -tropic (“turning; relating to growth direction”), ultimately from Greek orthós and tropḗ.

Definition
Describes (1) growth that is oriented straight up or down (e.g., a main stem growing upward), and (2) an engineering/materials term for a material whose properties are different in three perpendicular directions.
