From Oriental (relating to the East) + -ist (a person associated with a practice or field); ultimately from Latin oriens “rising (sun), east.”
‘ওরিয়েন্টাল’ (প্রাচ্য-সংক্রান্ত) + ‘-ইস্ট’ (কোনো ক্ষেত্র/চর্চার সঙ্গে যুক্ত ব্যক্তি) থেকে গঠিত; মূল শিকড় লাতিন oriens, অর্থ ‘উদীয়মান (সূর্য)’, তথা ‘পূর্ব’।
Definition
An orientalist is a person who researches or teaches about Eastern (especially Middle Eastern/Asian) languages, history, and cultures, or produces representations of them in art and writing; in modern critical use, it can also refer to someone who portrays “the East” through a biased, exoticizing, or colonial lens.
‘ওরিয়েন্টালিস্ট’ বলতে এমন একজন ব্যক্তিকে বোঝায় যিনি পূর্বাঞ্চল (বিশেষত মধ্যপ্রাচ্য/এশিয়া)-এর ভাষা, ইতিহাস ও সংস্কৃতি নিয়ে গবেষণা বা শিক্ষা দেন, কিংবা শিল্প-সাহিত্যে সেগুলোর উপস্থাপন করেন; আধুনিক সমালোচনামূলক ব্যবহারে এটি এমন কাউকেও বোঝাতে পারে যিনি ‘প্রাচ্য’কে পক্ষপাতদুষ্ট, বহিরঙ্গ-রোমান্টিক/বহির্প্রাচ্যীকরণমূলক বা ঔপনিবেশিক দৃষ্টিভঙ্গিতে উপস্থাপন করেন।
