Origin & History
Formed in modern academic English by adding the prefix “non-” (meaning ‘not’ or ‘without’) to “ethnography,” thus literally meaning ‘not ethnography’ or ‘without ethnography’; “ethnography” itself comes from Greek “ethnos” (people, nation) + “-graphia” (writing, description).

Definition
A theoretical or critical approach that examines cultures, communities, or social practices without relying on classic ethnographic tools like immersive fieldwork, participant observation, or detailed qualitative description. Instead, it may use textual analysis, data-driven methods, or second-hand reports to discuss cultural phenomena.
