Definition
Non-reductionism is a philosophical and scientific stance claiming that higher-level properties (e.g., consciousness, social norms, biological functions) are not completely explainable by only lower-level components (e.g., neurons, individual actions, molecules), and that explanations may need multiple levels, emergent features, or irreducible principles.
