From Hindi nīlgāy ‘blue cow’ (nīl ‘blue’ + gāy ‘cow’); the animal is also known in English as the blue bull.

হিন্দি ‘নীলগাই’ (nīল = ‘নীল/নীলচে’, গাই = ‘গরু’) শব্দ থেকে; ইংরেজিতে প্রাণীটি ‘blue bull’ নামেও পরিচিত।

Definition

Nilgai is the largest Asian antelope, a hoofed mammal found mainly in India and parts of Nepal and Pakistan; adult males often look bluish-gray, which is why it is also called the “blue bull.”

নীলগাই হলো এশিয়ার বৃহত্তম অ্যান্টিলোপ (খুরযুক্ত স্তন্যপায়ী), যা প্রধানত ভারত এবং নেপাল ও পাকিস্তানের কিছু অঞ্চলে পাওয়া যায়; প্রাপ্তবয়স্ক পুরুষদের দেহে নীলচে-ধূসর আভা থাকায় একে “নীল ষাঁড়” (blue bull) নামেও ডাকা হয়।
