Origin & History
From Greek narkōtikós (“benumbing”), via Latin narcoticus and French narcotique; the plural noun “narcotics” developed for such drugs, especially in legal/medical usage.
গ্রিক narkōtikós (“অবশ/ঝিমুনি আনে”) শব্দ থেকে, লাতিন narcoticus ও ফরাসি narcotique হয়ে ইংরেজিতে এসেছে; “narcotics” বহুবচন রূপটি আইনগত/চিকিৎসা পরিভাষায় এ ধরনের ওষুধ/মাদকের জন্য ব্যবহৃত হতে বিকশিত হয়েছে।
Definition
Narcotics are drugs/substances that can dull pain, cause drowsiness or sleep, and sometimes change mood or behaviour; the term is often used for opioid painkillers and, in law-enforcement contexts, for illegal drugs.
নারকোটিকস হলো এমন ওষুধ/পদার্থ যা ব্যথা কমায়, ঝিমুনি বা ঘুম আনে এবং কখনও কখনও মনোভাব বা আচরণ পরিবর্তন করতে পারে; শব্দটি প্রায়ই ওপিওয়েড জাতীয় ব্যথানাশক এবং আইন-শৃঙ্খলা/মাদকদ্রব্য প্রসঙ্গে অবৈধ মাদকের জন্য ব্যবহৃত হয়।
