Origin & History
From Sanskrit mleccha- (म्लेच्छ), used in ancient Indian literature for foreigners or those considered outside Vedic/Sanskritic norms; possibly imitative of ‘incomprehensible speech’ (onomatopoeic), though the exact origin is uncertain.

Definition
In Sanskrit and later South Asian usage, mleccha denotes outsiders—often foreigners or people seen as speaking unintelligible/non-Sanskrit speech—and by extension those viewed as ‘barbarous’ or outside orthodox (especially Brahmanical) social and ritual norms; the term is historically loaded and can be derogatory.
সংস্কৃত ও পরবর্তী দক্ষিণ এশীয় ব্যবহারে ‘ম্লেচ্ছ’ বলতে বহিরাগতকে বোঝায়—প্রায়ই বিদেশি বা যাদের ভাষা অস্পষ্ট/অ-সংস্কৃত বলে ধরা হতো—এবং প্রসারিত অর্থে যাদের ‘অসভ্য’ বা ব্রাহ্মণ্য সামাজিক-আচারগত নিয়মের বাইরে বলে মনে করা হতো; শব্দটি ঐতিহাসিকভাবে ভারী অর্থবহনকারী এবং অবমাননাসূচক হতে পারে।
