Origin & History
The term is a descriptive compound in English referring to the two parts of the fastening system (hooks and loops). It became common in the mid-to-late 20th century with the widespread adoption of the Velcro® brand and similar fasteners.

Definition
Hook-and-loop is a reusable fastening method made of two matching surfaces: a hook side and a loop side. When pressed together, the hooks catch the loops, creating a temporary but secure closure used in clothing, shoes, bags, and medical or industrial straps.
