'গ্রে' (অর্থাৎ সম্পূর্ণ পরিষ্কার বা অতিরিক্ত দূষিত নয়) এবং 'ওয়াটার' শব্দের সংমিশ্রণে শব্দটি গঠিত, যা ২০শ শতকের শেষ দিকে পরিবেশ প্রকৌশলে ব্যাপকভাবে ব্যবহৃত হতে শুরু করে।

গ্রেওয়াটার বলতে গৃহস্থালির কাজ যেমন গোসল, থালা-বাসন ধোয়া ও কাপড় ধোয়া থেকে উৎপন্ন অপেক্ষাকৃত কম দূষিত বর্জ্য জলকে বোঝায়, যা সামান্য পরিশোধনের পর সেচ বা টয়লেট ফ্লাশের কাজে পুনঃব্যবহার করা যায়।
