Origin & History
From furan (the name of a five-membered aromatic heterocycle containing one oxygen atom) + -based, meaning “having as a base or main component.” Furan is ultimately linked to Latin “furfur” (“bran”) because early furan compounds were obtained from bran-derived materials.
