এটি “cut corners” (২০শ শতকের শুরুর দিকের) বাগধারার থেকে এসেছে; শুরুতে অর্থ ছিল কোণ ঘেঁষে না গিয়ে কোণ ‘কেটে’ ছোট রাস্তা ধরা। পরে অর্থ প্রসারিত হয়ে দাঁড়ায় নিয়মিত ধাপ বাদ দিয়ে তাড়াহুড়া বা কম খরচে কাজ সারা; নির্মাণ ক্ষেত্রে এর অর্থ হয় মান ও নিরাপত্তা নষ্ট করে কাজ করা।
