colloid + -like থেকে গঠিত; colloid শব্দটি গ্রিক kólla ‘আঠা’ থেকে (আধুনিক বৈজ্ঞানিক লাতিন/ইউরোপীয় ব্যবহারের মাধ্যমে) এসেছে—আঠার মতো ছড়ানো/বিক্ষিপ্ত কণিকা-যুক্ত ব্যবস্থাকে বোঝাতে।
