বাংলা দেশজ ‘উঁকি/উঁকি মারা’ ক্রিয়াপদ-প্রয়োগ থেকে বিকশিত; নাসিক্য ‘উঁ’ ধ্বনি-সহ ‘ক’ ধাতু/ধ্বনিমূলক অংশ থেকে ‘উঁকি’ (অল্প সময়ের জন্য ঝটিতি দেখা) অর্থে প্রচলিত

আড়াল, ফাঁক বা ঢাকনার নিচ/পাশ থেকে সামান্য বেরিয়ে গোপনে বা কৌতূহলে দ্রুত দেখে নেওয়াকে ‘উঁকি’ বলা হয়; এটি হঠাৎ, ক্ষণিক ও আংশিক দৃষ্টির ভাব প্রকাশ করে
