‘সহিংসতা’ শব্দটি ‘হিংসা’ (ক্ষতি/আঘাত) মূল থেকে ‘সহ-’ উপসর্গ ও ‘-তা’ প্রত্যয় যোগে গঠিত; ‘করা’ বাংলা ক্রিয়াপদ—এ দুয়ে মিলে ‘সহিংসতা করা’ অর্থাৎ হিংসাত্মক কাজ সংঘটিত করা
