‘রেলওয়ে’ ইংরেজি railway শব্দ থেকে গৃহীত, এবং ‘লাইন’ ইংরেজি line শব্দ থেকে; যৌগিকভাবে এটি রেলপথ/রেল ট্র্যাক বোঝাতে বাংলায় প্রচলিত

রেলগাড়ি চলাচলের জন্য সমান্তরাল ধাতব পাত (রেল) ও তার ভিত্তি কাঠামো (স্লিপার, বালাস্ট ইত্যাদি) মিলিয়ে যে নির্দিষ্ট পথ বা ট্র্যাক তৈরি হয়; এক বা একাধিক ট্র্যাককে ‘লাইন’ বলেও উল্লেখ করা হয়
