সংস্কৃত ‘প্রতি’ (দিকে/প্রতি) + ‘শ্রুতি’ (শোনা/বচন); অর্থাৎ কথার প্রতিউত্তর বা কথা দিয়ে অঙ্গীকার করার ভাব থেকে শব্দটি গঠিত
From Sanskrit ‘prati’ (toward/in return) + ‘śruti’ (hearing/utterance); the sense developed into an assurance or commitment given by one’s word
