‘প্রসব’ শব্দটি সংস্কৃত ‘প্রসূতি/প্রসব’ ধারণা থেকে এসেছে (জন্মদান/প্রসব কার্য), আর ‘পরে’ বাংলা দেশজ/পুরাতন ইন্দো-আর্য ধারা থেকে বিকশিত ‘পর/পরবর্তী’ অর্থে ব্যবহৃত; মিলিয়ে বাক্যাংশটি ‘প্রসবের পরবর্তী সময়’ বোঝায়
