‘প্রান্তিক’ শব্দটি ‘প্রান্ত’ (ধার/শেষ সীমা) থেকে গঠিত; ‘স্তর’ অর্থ স্তর/স্তরবিন্যাসের একটি পর্যায়—সমাজবিজ্ঞান ও নীতি-আলোচনায় মূলধারার বাইরে থাকা গোষ্ঠী/অংশ বোঝাতে যুগ্মভাবে ব্যবহৃত
‘Prāntik’ is formed from ‘prānta’ (edge/boundary), and ‘star’ means a level/layer—used together in sociological and policy discourse to denote groups/sections outside the mainstream

সমাজ, অর্থনীতি, শিক্ষা বা কোনো শ্রেণিবিন্যাসে যে স্তরটি কেন্দ্র/মূলধারার বাইরে বা প্রান্তে অবস্থান করে এবং সাধারণত কম সুযোগ-সুবিধা, কম ক্ষমতা বা কম প্রতিনিধিত্ব পায়, তাকে প্রান্তিক স্তর বলা হয়
In society, economy, education, or any hierarchy, the layer that lies at the edge/outside the mainstream and typically has fewer opportunities, less power, or less representation is called the marginal layer
