শব্দটি দক্ষিণ এশীয় ভাষায় প্রচলিত; হিন্দি/উর্দু ‘पोस्त/پوسْت’ থেকে বাংলায় এসেছে বলে ধরা হয়, যার অর্থ আফিম পোস্ত গাছ/অফিম

পোস্ত বলতে সাধারণত আফিম পোস্ত (Papaver somniferum) গাছের ফলের ক্যাপসুল কাটলে যে দুধের মতো রস (ল্যাটেক্স) বের হয় তা শুকিয়ে যে মাদকীয় পদার্থ (অফিম) পাওয়া যায়—সেটিকে বোঝায়; কথ্য ভাষায় পোস্তের বীজকেও ‘পোস্ত’ বলা হয়, যা রান্না/মসলা হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হতে পারে
“পোস্ত” commonly refers to the narcotic latex obtained by scoring the seed capsule of the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum) and drying it—i.e., opium; in colloquial use, it can also refer to poppy seeds, which may be used in cooking as a spice/ingredient
