সংস্কৃতমূল ‘ঘাতক’ (হত্যাকারী/আঘাতকারী) শব্দে ‘অ-’ (নিষেধ/অভাব) উপসর্গ যুক্ত হয়ে ‘অঘাতক’—অর্থ ‘আঘাত-না-করার/প্রাণঘাতী নয়’

যে ব্যক্তি, বস্তু, কার্য বা পদার্থ ইচ্ছাকৃতভাবে বা প্রকৃতিগতভাবে আঘাত করে না, কিংবা আঘাত করলেও তা প্রাণঘাতী/মারাত্মক নয়—তাকে ‘অঘাতক’ বলা হয়
