সংস্কৃত উপসর্গ ‘নিঃ-’ (অভাব/বিয়োগার্থে) + ‘স্ব’ (নিজের/সম্পদ-সম্বল অর্থে ব্যবহৃত) থেকে ‘নিঃস্ব’—অর্থ ‘নিজস্ব কিছু নেই’
