‘নীল’ (ইন্ডিগো/নীল রং) + ‘কর’ (কর/করতা/কর্তা অর্থে: করণকারী/কারবারি) উপাদান থেকে গঠিত; ঔপনিবেশিক বাংলায় নীল ব্যবসা ও নীলচাষ পরিচালনাকারীদের বোঝাতে প্রচলিত হয়

Formed from Bengali ‘নীল’ (indigo/blue dye) + ‘কর’ (agent/doer/one who engages in an activity); came into common use in colonial Bengal to denote those engaged in controlling the indigo trade and cultivation.
