‘মিথ্যা’ শব্দটি সংস্কৃত ‘মিথ্যা’ (অর্থ: অসত্য) থেকে এবং ‘বলা’ ক্রিয়াটি ‘বল/বচন’ ধাতু-পরিবারের দেশীয় ব্যবহারের ধারায় গঠিত; দুইয়ে মিলে ‘অসত্য কথা বলা’ অর্থে যৌগিক ক্রিয়া
