আরবি ‘مفصل (মুফাস্সাল)’ শব্দ থেকে উদ্ভূত; ঔপনিবেশিক প্রশাসনিক ব্যবহারে ‘সদর শহরের বাইরে জেলা-অঞ্চল’ অর্থে বাংলা-উর্দুতে প্রতিষ্ঠিত
From Arabic ‘مفصل (mufaṣṣal)’; in colonial administrative usage it became established in Bengali/Urdu to mean ‘district/provincial areas outside the headquarters city’

রাজধানী বা বড় শহরের বাইরে অবস্থিত জেলা-শহর, মফস্বল থানা-সদর, ছোট নগর বা গ্রামাঞ্চল—যেখানে জীবনযাত্রা ও সুযোগ-সুবিধা তুলনামূলকভাবে কম নগরকেন্দ্রিক বলে ধরা হয়
