‘মানসিক’ শব্দটি ‘মানস’ (মন-সংক্রান্ত) থেকে; ‘রোগ’ সংস্কৃত ‘रोग (roga)’ থেকে উদ্ভূত—দুটি মিলিয়ে ‘মানসিক রোগ’ অর্থ মন-সম্পর্কিত অসুস্থতা/বিকার

মন, আবেগ, চিন্তা, উপলব্ধি বা আচরণে দীর্ঘস্থায়ী বা তীব্র অস্বাভাবিকতা সৃষ্টি করে এমন চিকিৎসাবিজ্ঞানের স্বীকৃত অবস্থা; যা দৈনন্দিন কাজ, সম্পর্ক, ও সামাজিক কার্যকারিতাকে উল্লেখযোগ্যভাবে ব্যাহত করতে পারে এবং প্রায়ই মূল্যায়ন ও চিকিৎসা (থেরাপি, ওষুধ, সহায়তা) প্রয়োজন হয়
