শব্দটি দক্ষিণ এশিয়ার বিভিন্ন ভাষায় প্রচলিত; বাংলা ‘লুঙ্গি’ মূলত হিন্দুস্তানি/উর্দু ‘লুঙ্গী’ থেকে গৃহীত বলে ধরা হয়, যার উৎস ফারসি/আরবি ‘লুং’ (কোমর/কটি) সংক্রান্ত শব্দধারা হতে পারে
The word is widespread in South Asian languages; Bengali ‘লুঙ্গি’ is generally considered a borrowing from Hindustani/Urdu ‘lungī’, possibly connected to a Persian/Arabic root ‘lung’ relating to the waist/loins
