ইংরেজি ‘cotton’ শব্দ থেকে বাংলায় গৃহীত; ইংরেজি শব্দটি আরবি ‘قُطْن’ (কুত্ন: তুলা) থেকে এসেছে

Definition
কটন বলতে তুলা গাছের বীজকে ঘিরে থাকা নরম সাদা আঁশকে বোঝায়; এই আঁশ সুতা বানিয়ে কাপড় তৈরি করতে ব্যবহৃত হয়, এবং ‘কটন’ বলতে অনেক সময় সেই সুতি কাপড়কেও বোঝানো হয়
Cotton refers to the soft white fibers surrounding the seeds of the cotton plant; these fibers are spun into yarn to make fabric, and ‘cotton’ can also mean cloth made from those fibers
