‘খণ্ড’ শব্দের পুনরুক্তি (খণ্ড+খণ্ড) থেকে গঠিত; ‘খণ্ড’ অর্থ অংশ/টুকরো, আর পুনরুক্তিতে বহু অংশে ভেঙে যাওয়ার তীব্রতা বা বিস্তার বোঝায়
Formed by reduplication of ‘খণ্ড’ (khanda + khanda); ‘খণ্ড’ means a part/piece, and the reduplication intensifies the sense of being broken/divided into many pieces

কোনো বস্তু, লেখা, ভূমি, বা ধারণা যখন ভেঙে/বিভক্ত হয়ে অনেকগুলো ছোট অংশে পরিণত হয়—সে অবস্থাকে ‘খণ্ডখণ্ড’ বলা হয়; এটি ভাঙা-চোরা বা অসম্পূর্ণভাবে টুকরো টুকরো হয়ে যাওয়ার ভাব প্রকাশ করে
