ইংরেজি ‘elastic’ শব্দ থেকে বাংলায় গৃহীত; মূলত লাতিন ‘elasticus’ (চালিত/ধাক্কা দেওয়া যায় এমন, টেনে ছাড়লে ফিরে আসে) থেকে উদ্ভূত
