সংস্কৃত ‘हास्य (হাস্য)’ থেকে উদ্ভূত; মূল ধাতু ‘हास (হাস)’—‘হাসা/হাসি’ অর্থে, এবং নবরসের একটি হিসেবে ‘হাস্যরস’ অর্থেও ব্যবহৃত
Derived from Sanskrit ‘हास्य (hāsya)’ from the root ‘हास (hāsa)’, meaning ‘laughter’; also used as the name of the comic sentiment (one of the classical rasas).

‘হাস্য’ বলতে হাসি, কৌতুক, তামাশা বা যে কোনো রসবোধ-উদ্দীপক বিষয়/অভিব্যক্তি বোঝায়; সাহিত্যে ও নাট্যে এটি ‘হাস্যরস’ (কমিক রস) অর্থেও ব্যবহৃত হয়
‘হাস্য’ denotes laughter, humor, joking, or anything that provokes amusement; in literature and drama it is also used in the sense of ‘comic sentiment’ (hāsya-rasa).
