‘চোট’ শব্দটি আঘাত/ক্ষতের অর্থে প্রাচীন ভারতীয় ভাষাভাণ্ডারের দেশজ (তৎসম নয়) প্রবণ উৎস থেকে এসেছে; ‘দেওয়া’ ক্রিয়াটি বাংলা ‘দেওয়া’ (দান/প্রদান) অর্থের সাধারণ ক্রিয়া, মিলিত হয়ে ‘চোট দেওয়া’ অর্থাৎ ‘আঘাত করা’ বাক্যাংশ গঠন করেছে
