সংস্কৃত ‘वि + चल’ (চল = নড়া/চলা; ‘বি/वि’ উপসর্গে অর্থে বিচ্যুতি/বিশেষতা)—অর্থাৎ ‘স্থিরতা থেকে সরে নড়ে ওঠা/দুলে ওঠা’ থেকে শব্দটি এসেছে

Definition
যে ব্যক্তি বা বস্তু স্থিরতা ও দৃঢ়তা হারিয়ে কাঁপে/দুলে ওঠে, কিংবা যে মন ভয়, দুঃখ বা উদ্বেগে স্থির থাকতে পারে না—তাকে ‘বিচল’ বলা হয়
