শব্দটি ঔপনিবেশিক ভারতীয় ব্যবহারে প্রচলিত ‘আয়া/আয়াহ’ থেকে; এটি পর্তুগিজ ‘aio/aya’ (পরিচারক/ধাত্রী অর্থে) থেকে প্রভাবিত বলে ধরা হয় এবং ইংরেজিতেও ‘ayah’ হিসেবে গৃহপরিচারিকা/শিশু-পরিচারিকার অর্থে ব্যবহৃত
